The Story of Bay Rum ...
What is Bay Rum?
Bay Rum, a subtly scented skin tonic, originated in the West Indies in the 17th Century. Made from the distillation of rum, itself a byproduct of sugar cane, and the oil extract from the leaf of the native Bay Tree (Pimenta racemosa), a member of the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). The fragrant oil derived from the distillation contains a phenolic essential oil used in lotions, soaps, and colognes for centuries. The name "Bay Rum" derives from the practice of boiling the bay leaves in white rum and water. Bay Rum became a most popular body lotion among men of distinction in 18th Century Europe, from whence it spread to the Americas and the Indian Continent. It continues to be a favorite among refined gentlemen to this day (Samuel Clements and Ernest Hemingway are among the notables, of whom it was said to be aficionados of bay rum). Proprietary bay rum lotions are produced in several West Indian republics, as well as American and Continental fragrance companies.
